Napredak Foundation was founded in 1996 to help serve the Roma community in Pazardjik. The Roma community was particularly hard hit after Bulgaria changed over from Communism. The standards of living for this community have severely decreased. Napredak Foundation serves many purposes for the Roma community in Pazardjik. It serves as a learning and cultural center for children and also a community outreach center. The foundations main goal is to assist the Roma population of Pazardjik in the areas of education, labor, social services, and health. Napredak works with local governments, institutions, and NGO's to improve the lives of Roma people. Together with these partner organizations they implement projects in Pazardjik that provide opportunities for Roma to better integrate into Bulgarian society. Napredak also serves as a center for Etnos, a multi-ethnic youth group, to meet and conduct their activities.
GOALS
Our goal at Napredak is to greatly improve the social, economic, health, educational, and cultural well-being of the Roma in Pazardjik. We are seeking to do this through the organization and implementaion of projects and programs that directly address these issues.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Helping children from disadvantaged families to stay in school
Helping stimulate and foster the abilities of talented children in the fields of sport and art
Raising community awareness for Roma culture and tradtion
Encouraging Roma children to more actively integrate in to the larger community through studying with Bulgarian students
Conducting health courses and lectures for young parents on caring for their children
Searching and finding employment for mentally and physically challenged people
Mediation between the Roma community and local governmental organizations
Educating the community about safe sex practices and the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV in particular
